Steering Problems and Won't Start?

Hoping you guys can help me figure out what's going on with my Liberty:

Last night I tried to turn on the Jeep and pull out of a parking space, but the steering was really rough; I could feel it and hear it in the steering wheel, like things were rubbing together where they shouldn't be. It was dark and I couldn't see in the engine very well, so I left it alone. (If it helps, it was about 34 deg F outside at this point.)

This morning I check, and I have plenty of power steering fluid, so I try to drive the Jeep to a shop near my house. It's still very rough driving and steering, and seems to be getting worse, so I pull into a parking lot to take another look at the engine. I turn it off, and the engine looks fine, so I go to drive away, but now the engine won't turn over. I give it a few tries, and a few rests, and then I try it while really pumping the gas hard, and it actually starts. It tries to stall a few times, but i rev the engine and keep it going, and then it settles down and runs fine.

And the strange part? My steering is back to normal. The whole Jeep is purring like a kitten.

Anybody have any insight on what the hell is going on in there?

Worn pump and/or rack&pinion steering gear.If the pump is bad could cause your issues and even hard starting.Old fluid and a partially plugged system can do the same and it kinda sounds like there was a partial plug and cleared itself.

I'd start by replacing the PS fluid.Just take a turkey baster and suck all you can out of the pump, refill, start KJ up and turn the steering wheell lock to lock a few times, shut of engine, pump out as much fluid, refill, and repeat the proccess till you go through at least 2qts of new PS fluid.

ATF+4 is what you need.

Thanks for the quick response! I'll go pick up some PS fluid now and try this... and I'll keep an eye on the PS pump.
