I'll lay it out:

There are 2 styles of keys that will open the doors and start the car:

One key with the transmitter built onto the key head (most expensive)
2nd key with the chip in it, but no keyless entry transmitter (not as expensive)

And there is one blank that will open the doors only (cheapest)

Now, someone wants to install a remote start, depending on the system, there are bypass modules for the car starters that don't need the third key, it has a chip of its own that gets programmed (you need two working chip keys though). Then there is the bypass that uses a key. They both work, the one that doesn't use a key is the most cost effective if you a car starter module that will support the chip programming, usually the car start modules that have the wait to start diesel function will allow the chip to be programmed.

Example:

2006 KJ with the transmitter key:

Transmitter key: 5189231AA $120
Key w/out transmitter will start vehicle: 05143553AA $50
Blank to open doors only: 05018689AA $10 (I believe that is the right number)

The key without the transmitter will work for all 2006 Jeep vehicles. The transmitter key part number is one I picked there are several depending on the vehicle.

So, if you have two working keys and want a third, get the third copied, you can program it yourself (directions in your owners manual). If you only have one working key, you are at the mercy of the dealer.

Thanks Brandoncrone, I will go to the dealership tomorrow with this part number and hopefully someone else is working. I went a couple weeks ago and they told me what you just posted...but the guy working tonight told me that the first guy was wrong and there were only two keys.

This makes me feel much better. Thanks again!

With the key with out a transmitter on it the alarm will sound untill the vehicle is started, found that out in my body electrical class last week. In the 07 Aspen you only need to get the key near the ignition switch to turn the alarm off.

Only if it was previously locked with the transmitter I believe.

So how would that impact a remote start? It sounds like they put this key with out a transmitter into a different transmitter to remote start the vehicle. I don't know if how I explained that made sense.

Brandoncrone, by the way, I called a different dealership today and mentioned the key with out a transmitter and they told me that it didn't exist. Then I told them I had a part number and they found in the system and ordered it for me. It came in the same day. Thanks for your help!

The part that the key goes into for the remote start is called a bypass module. All it does is simulate a key in the ignition by transmitting a transponder signal from the key inside through a ring of wire that is attached around the ignition lock cylinder. That key needs to be programmed to the vehicle in order for it to work. You do that by getting it copied to your existing keys and using the customer programming mode as in your owners manual

As far as a key just to open doors you can get one cut at Wally world for $1.25 it will unlock the doors and turn the engine over but it will die in about 2 seconds. I think I'll get one of those keys w/o remotes just to keep as spare so always have 2 programed. Had the Wally world one cut and keep in a hideakey box just incase the wife locks the keys in the KJ.

One way around the remote module is to tape a working key under the dash near the steering wheel. Its transponder will allow a remote start. The downside is that you loose the security of the key sentry.

My wife's KJ key was stolen a while back leaving me with just one key. I got a replacement on Ebay and had it cut at the local hardware store. Total cost about 20 bucks. Dealer did the programming for 25 bucks. I have a 2003 KJ.

I now have a spare key for a total of 3 keys, having 2 keys I saved the dealer charge and did it myself in minutes.

I got replacement fobs on Ebay also, self programmed.

On a vehicle with the transmitter on the key there is no disarm switch on the door cylinder, it uses the switch on the latch for a trigger.

I got a better one for you. Only got one key and that ones lost. Dealer says tow it in and buy a key and get charged for programming it in. Numbers he gave me were around 350.00 not including tow. Any way to get this done w/o towing ??? Is that 350.00 a realistic number?

well dang, that's a crappy situation, seeing as how they have to get all the information from the computer for the key, that might be a realistic amount. What I do is if my girlfriend might have to use the Jeep I leave the factory key (keyless entry key) inside the Jeep and take my spare key (cut to match, no chip, key only) with me. she has a spare key like my spare and uses it to open the Jeep, then gets the programmed key out of my under seat gun safe (with fingerprint scanner) to drive it.

I just noticed a leak from my differential too. Just had bearing replacement which means they screwed something up. When it rains it pours.
