Spare Key

I'm a recent purchaser of a 2005 Renegade. Love the ride. Truck only came with one key. Not to good if I or my wife lose it. Other than a dealer, who want mega bucks for a new one, is there any other source for a stock key with all the buttons?? Appreciate any info.

Have a door key made at your hardware store, that way if she locks the keys in she can get them. There is only a need for a chip for the ignition.

Ebay for key blanks, then have them cut to match yours. Ebay for keyless remotes. Even if this was a used vehicle they should have given you a second set (unless it was not a Jeep or DC related dealer). That happened when I picked up my slightly used 03 back in 12/04. Second keyless remote was not functioning properly, they gave me one before the deal was done.

Like others said, ebay for the blank, but you will have to take it into a dealer for the programing. You probably got a repo and they only had the one key.

Actually you can program a blank keyless entry unit if you have a working one. Also these things have the ID key setup so you have to have the key programmed to start the vehicle. this site has a "how to" section that includes programming a keyless remote. http://www.jeepkj.com/forums. Use at your own risk as I have not tried to program one.

Guess I should have checked that out. My Ranger came with one key and I had to pay $125 for a second.

Another option is just get a Valet key cut at the dealer. Not sure of the cost but it will open door and run car but does not have the remote for door locks or panic alarm. But has the chip in it to make it run. The dealer I am buying mine from 06 CDR said I get 2 Smart keys and if I want another it would be $149. But they would through in a valet key for free. So guess around 10-15. Hope this helps. LPR

Being as I had installed a remote starter & there was a lot of redundancy between the keyless entry & the starter I bought 2 valet keys on ebay. I think they were about $35 for the pair. Activating them was painless & only took a couple of minutes. My fancy $250 pair of keyless entry keys are now tucked away in my safe at home.

As stated above - Ebay is probably the fastest and cheapest to buy these skim keys.

My wife's 04 came with one key and one remote. I picked up another remote and key on fleebay. I was able to program the remote, but not the key. Found a lock shop in San Jose for $65.00 transponder key blank, cut, and programed.

when I looked around for my one key Renegade, all the keys on ebay were going for a minimum of $75 and then the dealer cost of $50 to cut and program. Our local dealer will sell you a key for $145 and program it free. For the extra $20, I am going with the dealer. That way if it doesn't work, there is no doubt as to who is at fault. Just my $.02.
