The was a couple of recalls. Lower ball joints on all KJ's, and rear control arm on some KJ's. You could check the vin" on jeep.com under "owners services" to see if there are any recalls not done. There is another recall coming on GC's and KJ's about the rear gas tank where as I understand the dealers are going to inspect/install a OEM hitch if it doesn't have one to protect the gas tank.....but that's another story.

Check to make sure the owners manual is in the hidden slot above the glove compartment.

Make sure you get 2 working keys as they need to be programmed to the jeep by the dealer if you only have one.

Other than giving it a good test drive, get it on the dirt and check 4wd and be sure it is working right and get underneath it and check it out for possible off road damage.....just jeep things.

Overall the KJ is a good jeep and pretty capable.

I'm sure others will chime in.

Waterpump and radiators are prone to go bad somewhere around 90-100k. Some sooner , some later . Check pinion seals on the front and rear diffs. Also check the front and rear output shaft seals on the transfercase. Unless you have documentation, figure on replacing all the fluids in the trans, tranfercase and front and rear diffs. And , as mentioned, check on what recalls have or haven't been done. Make sure all of the accessories work-lights,horn,turn signals, driving lights, high/low beams, windows, power mirrors ,rear defog, everything..... My .02 worth.

Support struts on the front hood & rear window tend to wear out as well, but these are a VERY easy fix and only cost ~$30/pair, so use this as a bargaining point on the price if you can.
