Securing Spare Tire

As a new Jeep Liberty owner, I'm worrying about my spare getting stolen. It seems to be very easy to take off. What are the recommended ways of securing it? I was thinking of wheel lock nuts...

there you go, thats probably the most popular way just go to your local auto parts store and get some locking nuts, or something along those lines

There was a thread a while back about the possibility of removing the enter spare tire with the rack by removing the three bolts behind the tire mount. There was even a link to some fancy do-dad sockets or something or other to prevent them from being removed. But in the end, has anyone actually had their spare tire stolen? I suppose if you park it in the wrong places . . .

Didn't your Liberty come with a wheel lock on the spare already? It should be standard.

Mine came with a lock....and the key was in the side pocket of the drivers door. I put it in the glove box. It's a 2003.

I was going to buy the lock lugs that hold the tire to the tail gate, but after I put on the lock lug onto the spare I realized that you can not access the bolts for the mount unless the tire is off. So if you can't take the tire off, you can't take off the mount. Unless, I suppose someone with baby hands can reach behind the tire to dismount the bracket from the tailgate. Unless I am missing somthing here?

My mom's came with a lock for it, hers is an '02.

My uncle said something about just having the right socket to defeat a wheel lock, so. . . if there's a way around it, and someone REALLY wants a Goodyear RS/A, they're gonna get it. I don't think they're that hot of a commodity, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Now if you've got a Goodyear MT/R on there, on the other hand. . .

yeah, you want to make it atleast difficult for them. Most of the time if they see a wheel lock they wont bother with it. There's also a way to secure your spare tire cover, any of you have some ideas?

Exactly. Point is to make it as secure as possible. Nothing is 100% theft proof, but my point is to make it difficult for theves to steal tires. I don't have a cover yet, it's on my list to buy

I used a thick vinyl/steel bicycle cable lock on mine, around the wheel and the mount bracket.

Nothing is perfect, but anything to slow 'em down...

spare tire security

what's to prevent some idiot from slicing your tire with a knife if he gets pissed? I wonder how many people have had their tires knifed, seeing as the spare is really out there to be had by someone with bad intentions.

Protecting the spare from being sliced is not that important since you have four unprotected tires on the ground. If people are half way intelligent and pissed at you they will slice two of your tires on the ground then the spare really makes no difference! Plus they get the joy of watching you look at the first tire and if you miss the second one, you change the spare in and *still* are stuck!! I know, it happened to me at a job in college...and the sad thing is that it wasn't even me that screwed the person, I just happened to be the odd man out so I got the blame so all the locals could save face! I was mad as all get off, but I just let it go and moved on to another job...I graduated college and those locals are still there...I always stop on the way through when I'm back in town just to taunt them a bit by being nice to them :-)
