Reverse issue on 04

I've got a 2004 Liberty 4x4 sport. I put it in 4 WD a while back and it was hard to get in and then back out. Just did it to lube things up somewhat cause hadn't been in 4wd in a while. Well itfinally after a lot of work went back in. Well I noticed the other day I was going to back up our driveway...which is a decent incline..it really struggled. On level ground it backs ok but up a hill..its real tough. Too the point where I just avoid it altogether. My question..is it possible it stayed in 4wd or is this normal for these vehicles or is it a possible trans problem beginning? I know this is odd sounding but I hardly ever drive this thing it was my Wifes. Now we have given it to my Son and I just put gas in it. So I can't really say if this was normal since it was new. Any thoughts?
