Replacing Fuel Filter on a 2005 Liberty CRD

Is replacing the fuel filter on a 2005 Liberty CRD difficult? If not, instructions please...

I fear I have been told a whopper.
I went to the dealer for a filter and the parts man who I know and trust gave me a BIG box. It was a filter all right, plus the whole blooming housing. He said there was a bulletin to change the entire unit plus the wires leading to it.

What the dickens is that about?

Oh, it was going to cost $112 even with my employee discount!!

I haven't had any problems except for fuel gellling. Anti gel took care of that.

The housing has a heating element in it. It heats the diesel fuel and keeps it from gelling in the cold weather. That heating element can go bad, leading to a possible leak and/or engine fire. Not everybody has had the problem.

If you have seen no leaks at all...then forget that part for now and just buy a filter. www.lubricationspecialist.com sells CAT brand fuel filters for our Jeeps that are better quality, and cheaper.

The hardest part is getting the filter unscrewed because there is very little room for your hands in there, or your filter wrench. Also, be careful with the harness that plugs into the bottom of the filter. Once you get the new one on and the harness plugged back in the bottom...you'll have to bleed the system with the primer pump on the housing. There is a bleeder valve on the housing too...just loosen it with a 10 mil wrench (I think), bleed the air out, then retighten the valve and you should be ready to go.

Are you suggesting the heater can malfunction such that it overheats? I touched mine after a long drive and it was still cool to the touch. Of course it was only about 12 degrees F that day.

BTW, I know I had gelling because I limped to town one day with very little power. I filled my tank and added a fresh dose of antigel. The gauge stayed at half tank for about 15-20 miles on the highway. As soon as the gauge came up to full the power was back. I have started using Howes brand now with every fill up and it worked for me. I buy it at the local farm and fleet and have also seen it at Flying J stations.

I think I will buy the whole housing thing just to have it handy in case of trouble. Someone else suggested NAPA has fuel filters for the Libby. You know anything about that?

Plus, how can you drain water from the filter when there is no drain?

The Howes brand I mentioned guarantees no gelling or they pay the tow. It brags that it lubricates the pump and injectors plus removes water. That is a lot of brag for one additive but I know it unclogged my gel problem.

The original fuel housing's can and do have overheating problems, there gets to be air trapped at the top of the fuel head heating element. Then bad things can happen. You will not feel abnormal heat just by touching it.

When looking at the fuel head from the front - unplug the right hand connector and look for any melting, fuel weepage (wet), or electrical scoring. If there are any of these present, do not plug it back in, period. I just leave mine unplugged, not willing to take any chances.

Several people have told me they get underneath the vehicle and reach up to unplug the wire at the bottom of the filter.

I looked at my setup and determined it would be easier to unscrew the nuts holding the assembly to the firewall. That way the whole works came off and I could get at the plug in on the bottom of the filter. It was a bit hard to unscrew the filter without the housing being fastened down.

Seems to me there should be a tool that can grab the filter and allow a guy to turn the filter in place.

I am seriously considering installing a quick disconnect plug on the wire that goes down to the bottom of the filter. That way the wire can just drop out of the way then I might be able to slip a strap wrench over the filter.

I will try it next time and let you know.

Oh, once you have replaced the filter, you need to open the valve on the top of the main body and push out any air by pumping the primer knob. Press down and watch for fuel to come out, then tighten the bleeder valve. I connected a piece of clear tubing over mine and had it drip into a small can. That prevented spilling fuel under the hood.

I've done it both ways. Just remove the housing. Much less pain and strain.

Guys...This is my first post/reply on this forum.

But seriously guys..I just finished replacing my fuel filter. This is by far, the easiest filter replacement I have ever done. This is my 4th diesel vehicle. 6.5 GMC diesel, Cummins 5.9, Mercedes 6 cyl diesel.

Easy.
1) Get underneath the jeep, drivers side, unplug the water sensor connector. I had to turn the water drain to the left a little to get a good grip.
2) from top of vehicle. Disconnect the Heater sensor.. DO NOT Disconnect any hoses or the other Temp Sensor.
3) Unscrew the fuel filter.. I didnt need any tools to do this. Able to unscrew by hand.
4) After it is loose, work it up through the top. The other wire harness is not really in your way.. and the fuel hose just pushed out of your way with out binding. Didn't spill a drop of fuel.

After putting the new fuel filter, had to prime the pump about 60 times.. and bleed the air out of the bleeder screw.

No need to unbolt the entire filter housing or the temp sensor or replacing from underneath.. nonsense.
