Remote Start for a 2002 Jeep Liberty?

I'm looking at installing a remote start system in my wife's 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited. I am trying to keep this cheap, so I am going to install it myself. I am looking at a simple Ready Remote system, as I don't need an alarm or any other extras. Looking over the directions, the install doesn't appear difficult (I have installed plenty of radios/speakers/subs/amps). According to the manufacturer, the Liberty only requires one bypass (alarm). Does anyone have any experience doing this? Thanks!

Yeah, it's fairly easy. You will need the interface module which DEI makes. It's the 556UW module. Also, you will need an extra key which has the chip inside to put inside the module. Otherwise it's fairly simple, just hooking up wires to the ignition harnass, tach, and a few others.

If you are looking for a very simple, cheap remote start.. check out the Hornet 569. It's listed on Amazon.com for around $110, but selling for $40.

Good luck.

Do all Libertys have Transponder Chip keys? It seems to me that my wife's 04 Columbia Sport has a generic Curtis key blank key in the extras we got with it (bought used). I have not tried to operate the vehicle with anything other than the factory key.

My 2002 does not have the transponder in the key. IIRC Jeep calls it the sentry key system and it was an option.

Hope this helps

Our KJ has the chipped sentry key and it is gray and noticeably thicker, as compared to my wrangler key which is black and fairly thin. I added some links to key blanks on eBay, so that you can see pictures of what I am talking about.

Sentry Key (similar to the one below, only with Jeep on it):

Non-Sentry Key:
