Recall?

Hey guys,

So I JUST NOW got a letter from Chrysler about my 02 Liberty being recalled for an issue where the airbags deploy unexpectedly. I looked into it and found that the recall had been issued on November 8, 2012 and they had just now, nearly three months later gotten around to informing me of the issue. Not only that but in the letter they noted that parts were not in dealers yet and might not be for a while. My air bag light has been on for two days now and I wanted to see if anyone here had a similar experience with this?

The recall is for a functioning system, with your light on the system has a fault so the airbags can not/will not deploy. The recall will not fix your issue.

In the recall they stated it would be months before the notices went out and months after that before parts would be sent out to fix.

Yeah, I'm going to call Chrysler in the morning to see what's up with this and have them explain it specifically to me.

Sounds pretty clear. You have parts that probably haven't been made in a while and the tooling is possibly gone. They have to bring up production to fill the needs.

As for your light, have the codes read so you know what to fix.

It also might be worth noting that I just had my radiator replaced by a jeep dealer under a week ago.

For those who want to see the letter dubvtb3 is referring to-
here's a link to a file that has the interim notification letter:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...2V527-0126.pdf.

Note: this information is available from NHTSA.

IMPORTANT!!

Airbag Warning Light

You will want to have the airbag system ready to inflate
for your protection in an impact. The airbag system is
designed to be maintenance free. If any of the following
occurs, have an authorized dealer service the system
promptly:
1. Does not come on during the 6 to 8 seconds after the
ignition switch is first turned on.
2. Remains on after the 6 to 8 second interval.
3. Comes on for any period of time while driving.

I think that they may have damaged the sensors next to the radiator when it was being replaced. Calling them today to see what's up.

Interesting. I just had the L27 recall fixed maybe 3 weeks ago (early Jan 2013) and while at the dealer asked if there was any other active recalls and there answer was "No". OP, you said this recall was issued Nov 2012?

The recall was announced in November but did not go into effect until January. If you do the recall search on Jeeps website it will show January 2013 as the effective date for the recall. You would think Jeep would have started making more parts since they knew this was coming.

NHTSA expects that all owners will be notified of a safety defect in their vehicles within 60 days of a manufacturer's notification to NHTSA of a safety defect in those vehicles.

This is whether or not the supplier has the parts ready to sell to Jeep.

How fast do you think they can ramp up production and produce hundreds of thousands of replacement parts? For older vehicles.

Serious question.

Thanks for the URL...the Airbag light has been coming on and off the last couple of months on our 2003 KJ. I hope the recall includes our Jeep.

Funny...I just called a Jeep service department near us. They knew about the recall, but said the light "could be anything". According to the rep, this recall affects the passenger side air bag. Also, they were told parts wouldn't be in until early 2nd quarter 2013.
