part time light on when not in part time

the part time light is on, when the part time 4wd is NOT engaged, when I actually engage the 4wd, the light goes OFF, 4Lo works fine and lights up the way it's supposed to. the Dealer said i needed to have the sensor replaced, which was a 70-80 dollar part, plus another diagnostic fee and labor. Has anyone else had this problem? BTW, my transmission works correctly, it's just the light that is wrong

thanks
-K

My 03 Liberty does the same thing. Actually the light has been on for a few years now. It is the sensor on the top of the transfer case and it is a 70-80 dollar part. If you have a shop manual it will tell exactly what its called and how to replace it. I have toyed with the idea of pulling one out of a junk yard Libby and getting a new o-ring, but the light being on does hurt anything! And I know when I'm in 4WD and when I'm not, don't need a dopey light to let me know!

Its #2 in that picture I posted. Its just a light but it may also tell the Jeep when its in 4low which re-tunes the engine for maximum engine torque at lower rpms and turns the Air-bags off.

I have the same problem with my '03. I looked into changing it but it's in a difficult place to get to. I think you have to drop the tranny to get to it.

Why would you drop the tranny to change something on the transfer case?

I looked at it a few years ago and I remember it was in a difficult spot between the transfer case and the transmission tunnel under the car, therefore I just live with the light.

If anyone has a tip on how to change it easily, please share...

On this topic...we just bought our 04 KJ TWO DAYS AGO...and this happened yesterday...took it in and the service writer said it's quite common and isn't that big of a deal, as a matter of fact many owners just live with the light on...but since we owned the jeep for a day and this happened they're replacing it for free...
