P0455 Error EVAP Emissions Control Large Leak 2002 Jeep Liberty?

I just bought a 2002 Jeep Liberty 2 days ago, warranty only covers engine and transmission. I got a "check engine soon" light and the diag sends P0455 code which is a EVAP Emissions Control Large System Leak. I checked the gas cap and it is tight fitting with no leaks or cracks and it is a factory cap. The car runs fine with no problems any suggestions and is it ok to drive it with the error?

If you just got it from a dealer 2 days ago, then they should fix it. That is my opinion anyway. It might be just a hose broke. Yes you can drive it, but take it back.

Just my opinion.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the Jeep.

Unfortunately I did buy it at a "Buy Here Pay Here Lot" as is so if it is not underneath the warranty they will not fix it withough extra $$.

I agree, unfair.

I have a family member who is a mechanic and he hooked it up to his diagnostics machine and it stated it is due to the Canister Purge Solenoid.

Not that it's really affecting my jeep that much but I am being told it will affect my gas mileage so that's def something I need to get fixed.

Thanks for the welcome and the congrats, despite this minor thing I do LOVE my new vehicle

you'll be fine mine light has been on like that for a couple weeks now, Im just too lazy to fix it right now, more than likely its just a hose that is worn out up between your gas tank and rear axle.

Welcome to the forum! be sure to also check out www.lostkjs.com lots of KJ info there you might even get a better answer over there then from what I gave you. lots of OH members too so you can find some people to wheel with.

If that Liberty has under 80K, it can be fixed FREE at a dealership. It's a federal law thing.
Check it out. I'm 90% sure I'm correct on my statement.

I bought an 03 on Jan 9th. It too had a check engine light on. My son scanned it and it showed the same code. He was able to clear the code and it was fine for the first couple of weeks. I then broke my ankle and could not drive at all. It sat for about three weeks. When I was able to drive it last week the check engine light came on again. I disconnected the neg. battery cable and it has not returned as of yet. It seems to me that it might be something that is related to the Jeep not being used and just sitting. As long as mine is being driven regularly the light does not come on. I think I may buy a new gas cap anyway. It might be a cheap fix. I have owned other cars that would not pass the Echeck when it was in use here in Ohio because the gas cap was not tight enough. MKaye02 I live in Cincinnati and it looks like we might have to get a local meet together when the weather warms up.

MKaye02-Most of the time this code is from a bad gas cap.If its not the cap, youll need to get what they call a smoke test to see if there are any leaks in your EVAP system. My daughter had this spent 300 for the leak test to find out it was a bad gas cap.

Ok, in the chance it is a gas cap, you could even go to a Mopar Dealer and get one to be sure it is the right one. They are probably only around $15 or so. That's better than spending $300. If it doesn't work, you're only out the $15.

it's not the gas cap, we checked. We've got a factory cap with no cracks and a tight fit..

we reset the codes and it hasn't come back up we'll see if it does. we also inspected the hoses and didn't see any visible leaks but were also told it could be the canister solanoid or something (excuse my lack of knowledge on terms)

The gas cap can look and feel perfectly fine and still be bad.

Molly,
My 05 is getting the same code. My husband cleared it several times until it would not clear any longer. On 08-07-08 the dealer charged us $57 for a detector (48915125AB) and $79 for labor. On 08-26-08 the code appeared again and the dealer noted the code and reset, passing all tests and charging us $17.

The code appeared again yesterday and would not clear at home. Can any one give my husband some more insight before he sees the dealer again? Should this part go bad so quickly? Was it the part? What else is included in this code? Can he replace it himself?

I love my Jeep and would like to keep it around for many more years.

Weird .. I just got a P0457 code yesterday which indicates a similar problem with the evap system. Mine is at the dealership right now. I checked the gas cap (swapped out the locking one for the OEM), inspected my hoses, stopped because that's about as useful as I get. Will post when I get the results.

I guess I can't be of much help. The dealership checked the hoses, pressure tested the EVAP system, cleaned up the gas tank filler and cleared the code. Told me it was probably the gas cap and added $100 to my bill. Ugh!

They did promise to look at it again at no charge if the code comes back in the next couple weeks. I wish i would have known to take 3 short trips to clear the code myself! Live and learn as they say.

Good Luck

Luke,

Thanks for the advice. The wife parked the Jeep in the garage tonight and it smelled kind of "gassy". I think I will try a new gas cap and try to clear the code again before I go to the dealer a week from Monday.

I am glad she found this site. You folks are really helpful.
