Overdrive button

Hi, I tried searching the overdrive subject I'm asking about but I couldnít find any specifics.

On short trips around town do you use the overdrive button on the side of the shifter? What are the advantages and disadvantages? How do I use it correctly? I havenít been using it...but, last night I pressed the button and the dash light showed overdrive "off" light? I'm guessing it is engaged unless you press the button and the overdrive light on dash shows off? How is gas mileage effected with it on?

Hi Dupe

The Overdrive (O/D) button on the shifter is mainly for use when towing as it stops the tranny from over heating when driving over hilly roads. It basically stops the overdrive gear from engaging. You will also get worse MPG dis-engaging the O/D along with more engine noise at higher speeds because the tranny wont be able to shift into top gear. I hope this helps.

Really depends on the kind of driving, I turn the O/D off in my truck while driving around town because it likes to shift into overdrive at about 30 mph. I usually leave it off until I'll be going over 45 mph for quite a distance. I've actually got better gas mileage driving like this rather than with the O/D on.

simply limits your jeep to 3rd gear.
bad choice on the highway unless you want to have +3000rpm on 50mph..

That's Nice..

CRDs need all the power they can get from wherever source it could be.
I better go check the CRD specs, I bet it beats the Escape Hybrid.

Any chance JEEP will make a hybrid? I doubt it

My main gripe w/ hybrids isnt the battery taking over for <25mph driving, it's the weak highway gas engines. Isnt is possible to put the hybrid batter in there to take over for stop and go BS driving-- and still have the 3.7 in there for get-up-and go driving? I realize that 28city/21highway probably looks strange, but hey, it's still an emission improvement right?

I have a 5 speed 2.8 CRD Auto but I don't know the specs or gear ratios, it seems to do 1800rpm at 60mph on the motorway/highway. Seems to do about 34mpg on the flat at that speed.

It's no where as good as that around city driving but it's tough to get it under 21mpg average.
