Oil Change Already?
I just got my new 08 Liberty on July 1st. I have put almost 2600 miles on it and it just started to tell me "Oil Change Required" when I start up the engine. Is this normal? I normally get an oil change about every 3 months and am surprised to already need one. My guess is maybe it is due to the mileage. I am curious if other owners get this message and if it is by the mileage or oil level? I haven't physically checked the oil level yet, which I should probably do, but I would think there would be a problem if I am losing that much oil to already need a change.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

This is normal. My wrangler had this message at 2600 too. Its because the engine is brand new. Anytime a new engine breaks in, some metal wears off from the rough edges created in the manufacturing process creating a dirtier than normal situation. That, and all of the "break in lube" (the stuff they squirt on the bearings while assembling the engine) has done its job and now needs to be removed.
On the 454 we put in my friends chevy, it actually recommended a change at 400 miles. I was surprised we could go as long as 2600 miles in our jeeps. The sensor reads many things. From the amount of engine rotations since the last change, to viscosity. Its not any one thing, and the mileage at which it lights up will vary.

Mine made it to 2800 before I got the first oil change message. Just finished my second one at 5800, so I got 3000 out of the second oil change.

Thanks guys, I am glad to know that it is normal. I won't be able to take it in for at least a week, so hopefully the message doesn't mean it needs immediate attention.

Yeah, thats easier on the engine, though not the best for break in. My first 2600 miles were mostly city with a decent amount of wheeling too. My manual says to change my oil every 6000mi, though the 2007 manual states that if the vehicle is used in "extreme conditions" to change it every 3000mi. I change mine every 3000. ![]()

I would say just about 2000 of my first miles were highway. We literally got the Jeep and then had to use it to drive across several states.
The Liberty is the best vehicle I have ever owned! I just wish it didn't need an oil change already. ![]() |
