Oil Change

Yep its gettin to be about that time to change the oil. My Libs a little over 50K and I was wondering if using synthetic oil instead would be a good change.

Your question is going to generate all kinds of flak. I prefer regular oil.....either Castrol 5w/30 or Quaker State 5w/30. I don't believe in extended drain intervals touted by supporters of synthetics. I just don't agree that keeping any contaminants in the engine system for extended time periods is either sensible or a good thing to do. I will swear by either Castrol or Quaker State because I've used them for years with excellent results. Make sure to change your oil filter every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. I use either Fram or Motocraft filters in my Liberty.

I use Amsoil. I change the Filter every 6 Months and change the oil every 20,000 miles.
You can take a look : http://www.Synthetics.vze.com

Motorcraft Filters are very good. Made by Puralator, arguably better than and almost always cheaper than Fram (almost as cheap as the generic brands). And, available at Wal*mart (so easy to find).

Of the 3 brands I see at Wal*mart for sale (Fram, MC, and their house brand SuperTech), I always get the Motorcraft, regardless of the type of vehicle its going on.

Sure it ends up costing me a bit more but a lot less then a engine rebuild but I use sync oil on every oil change and I change every 3k miles or 3 mths. like clockwork.

I think one thing should be brought up, you have 50,000 miles already. And all my Vehicles, I get them and replaced the standard oil with synthetic right from the start. If you drop in synthetic now, you could have oil leaks, because synthetic goes a lot of places regular doesn't and your seals could be dried, cracked or whatever. So you might be facing additional costs.

its important to run on the original (dino) oil that comes stock in your car for at least the first 1,000 miles. The engine will not be able to break in properly if you swap in synthetic immediately. Only vehicles such as Vette's come stock with syn.

I use Valvoline 5W-30 Synthetic in winter (10W-30 in summer). You can drive your engine harder with synthetic because syn doesnt break down and also keeps a nice residue on your engine for better start-ups.

I used to use dino oil in my old car. I have no gripes about it. But I do feel much more confident that I am treating my engine good with syn. I Use fram oil filters and change the oil out every 5k miles.
