I just recently threw this code on my Liberty. I have been searching and apparently it is a problem with the engine being too cold, or not warming up fast enough. What is the cause of this engine code being thrown?? Also, are there any long term effects from this? Is it common? Thanks for any help in advance.

Have never seen that number listed, they all start with a P0 that I've seen. P0281 is Cylinder 7, contribution/balance faulty wiring, fuel system,ECM.
P0128 is Coolant Thermostat-Coolant tempature below thermostat regulating temperature Mechanical Fault.

The breakdown is the P= powertrain, the first number is manufacturer specific,(usually a 0,1,2) the second number is a SAE defined number, the next two numbers are SAE hex codes. P1281 can be a good "P" code but with out knowing year and engine I could be going through a bunch of infor looking for one P code.

That code is for the engine being cold too long. Possible that the thermostat is stuck partially open keeping the engine cold. Best thing to start with is to replace the tstat.

I have the same problem... but I just replaced the stat a year before and it took only 8 months for it to do it again. Seems a bit soon...

^^no its not, its for a faulty thermostat. my jeep just threw this code but its like 30 degrees outside, so could that be a reason its throwing the code? My jeep is taking awhile to get up to 210 though.

OBDII powertrain codes, that begin with a P, are assigned all the way to P0999. Once above that, they are propreitary codes, assigned by the car maker. P1000 is an infamous code that drives the Ford owners nuts, until they learn what it really means.
