Longevity of a KJ 3.7

Hi,

I just went through a terrible situation with my 02 GC with the 4.7 and hear that the 3.7 is derived from it.

I am now looking at purchasing an 04 liberty with 78K on it.

Can any KJ owners with high mileage rigs let me know what their reliability has been with this engine?

The KJ seems very well maintained and clean, but I don't want to buy one if it's likely for me to have major engine problems in 50k or so.

Is it common for a 3.7 to make it to 200K?

Have heard of some in the 300,000 range, I only have 145,000, couple of friends who are in the 175,000/180,000 and no problems
like anything else depends on how well cared for it was and how it was treated.

Bingo.

If people actually service them PROPERLY, and on a regular basis, it becomes rare to hear of 3.7s and 4.7s dying prematurely. They are actually very good engines. But too many people think they can just drive 'em and never do anything else. Just get in and drive. Forever. And it doesn't work that way.

So what happened to your 4.7? Did it completely blow up?

Our '04 has 216000 Km/134216.18 miles
The only parts that needed to be replaced were the water pump
and the A/C condenser.
Still going strong and drives like a dream!

My 4.7 burned about 4.5 quarts between an oil change and thus developed a rod knock at 125K. I had a shop do a short block rebuild but it was never right. The shop said the 4.7s are terrible and never make it to 200k without major work.

My inlaws have a 06 w/3.7 and they have 88k on it. it had to have some warranty headwork done at 30k. Other than that the engine has been great. The left front bearing is howling and the esp light has been on for 10k.

I think that motor is built like a tank. Considering it has not had a tranny flush, or new spark plugs. same diff oil ...nothing has been done except It might get a oil change every 10k with dino maybe......

Ive never had issues with mopar drivetrains if you follow the propper service or do it a bit earlier than stated. I just wish they made there electroincs and sensors etc. better

have an 05 with about 105K miles on it. Runs like a champ; only problem I have is with the AC and seems like I always have a problem with it but other than that...I highly recommend...

I have a 2001 WJ with the 4.7 and she's spot on with 240ish on the odometer. sounds like the air pump is a little off but other than that I barely touch the oil in between oil changes and its always clean after 5000kms.
