knocking sound

Hey Everyone,

I have an 02' LTD liberty. Today started a knocking sound from the front of the engine. At first i thought it was the fan. Checked my oil and was low, but not empty. Put in a 2 qts. Still has a knocking sound. (the car has sat for a month due to me having knee surgery)

I noticed that the metal piece behind the bottom left belt roller wiggles a bit. The knocking is while idle and revs up when on the gas. Is it possible for the a/c compressor to cause the noise? If so is it hard/expensive to replace?

Is there anyone out there that has had a similar problem? My father in law thinks its the top left roller that is busted and is where the knocking is coming from.

Please help.
Thanks
Dani

take the belt off and start it up and see if you still have the noise. This is let you know if it something belt driven or in the engine. When you got the belt off do a hand check of the pulleys and see if you have a bad bearing in one.
Also note: with the belt removed your water pump isnt pumping so you can have it running for a little bit but dont go take it down the eway or anything
