"Knocking" sound in 2004 Liberty

When I bought my 2004 Liberty new from the dealer in October 2004, I noticed a "knocking" sound coming from the rear of the vehicle.

Below 45 MPH and especially on unpaved roads, the driver hears a "knocking" sound coming from the left rear of my Liberty but a person in the right-rear passenger's seat says the sound seems to be coming from the right rear. Now, the 'knocking" sound has become very noticeable.

(Above 50 MPH on paved roads, the "knocking" sound is not noticeable or doesn't exist).

From my description, do you think the "knocking" sound is coming from a broken/loose shock-absorber or strut; from a failing wheel bearing; from within the axle; or other source?

The things to inspect are the shock bolts, rear upper tri-link ball joint, drive shaft u-joint, lower control arm bushings etc. Some have simply tightened the shock bolts and problem solved.

Could be a lot of things...Ours all of a sudden started doing it, and I found the pad fell off the emergency brake shoes on one side, since we never use the e-brake, i just pulled all the pad out of the drum, and it quit making noise.
