KJ Select trac vs command trac

hey guys, what would be better? i like the idea of having an auto 4x4 but would it be as strong as a traditional system?

i guess im wondering which one is stronger, and if theres a trade off between the two.

also, what model year ranges were these on?

thanks

the command trac is 15% stronger but I dont think you will break either, unless you try to.

Yeah, I agree with jsc.

As to your question about what jeeps the selec-trac (NP242) was used in would include the 02-07 KJ. It was used in the XJ as an option over the command-trac, and some WJ's had it with the 4.0 and AW4 drivetrain. Not sure of the exact model years. It was optional. It might have been used in others. The new KK has a variant of it that is electronilly operated instead of the manual shifter. Personally, I prefer the manual shifter.

What it has is an "open diff" in the t-case that allows the front and rear axles to "slip" so it can operate without binding up on all road surfaces when you use the "full-time" option. I use it a lot in the winter and havn't broke it yet.

What it is good for is in the winter when you have roads partially melted to pavement with snowy sections and pavement sections. Or when you are on pavement and then turn on a snow covered side road or something like that, or when there is snow drifts across the road. You don't have to shift in and out of part-time. You can just leave it in full-time. It works pretty good for that.

If you are off-road part-time is better for that as it locks both axles.

i have looked around, and i dont know if people arent selling them or not. But is select-trac only on the limited? or can you get it on the sport. The only limited's i can find are all Auto. I prefer a manual tranny.

Yeah, mostly the selec-trac is found on the limited models. It can be in a sport though, but harder to find. I am not sure if it was offered with the standard tranny.

The Select-Trac on the KJ is not automatic or electronic. Its options are selected via a lever, like the Command Trac. It just has an additional option for 4-Fulltime. Note that the SelectTrac and the SelectTrac II in the KK are entirely different transfer cases.
