Key stuck in ignition?

Hey all, i was backing out of a driveway today and shifted from reverse to drive and heard a subtle clack type noise, ever since then i do not have to pull the shifter lever thing to engage gears it will slide through all of them, even in out and of park and the key will not come out of the ignition, any ideas on what that would be?? thanks.

There is a safety switch off the brake pedal that allows you to shift out of park. Maybe that broke. And if I remember it prevents one of removing the key unless car is in park. And on the other hand it could be some linkeage off the shifter.

Yea, there is a 'interlock' cable that runs from the shifter to the ignition and brake. I would say it came off.

This is there to make sure the shifter cannot be moves unless the brake is pressed and also makes sure the shifter is in P before you take the key out.

Edit: Busch beat me to it.

You might be able to see something if you pop off your shifter cover plate. It just lifts up.
Just depends on which end broke or came off.

thanks guys, do you know if that is an expensive problem to fix? because i think that is what the problem is because the little lever i still do not know what it is called, but it will pull to a certain extent and then click all the way back

Depends on what the problem is. Lift the trim piece around the shift off and see if you can see anything. I believe you can see the shift cable with that off.

I have this same issue I was able to see the cable and it is connected it just doesn't seem tight enough the plastic piece on the shifter doesn't engage all the way forward and I cant the key out. I can pull it forward manually and that will allow me to remove the key from the ignition. Any ideas on how much this is going to cost me to get fixed?

@MoTheMan

Hey,

I have an '06 CRD and I encounted the same issue. I removed the entire floor console to inspect the area around the shifter. It looks like there is a solenoid that is supposed to push the plastic rocker all the way forward. I would guess that the solenoid has either failed, or the spring inside it has failed. The solenoid may or may not be replaceable, I'm not sure how Jeep sells the parts. They may only sell the entire assembly.

Anyhow, I've contacted my retailer to see what they think.

I've run into the same problem with my 2006 Liberty. Key will not always come out and you can go thru all the gears without pressing the gear shift button. It will lock in Park and you need to press the brake to release however. I definitely want to know a solution should someone find it.

Had the exact same problem with my 2006 Liberty. Here is what the invoice said: Replace steering column column, cable, and gear shift cable. Total $708. With 37,300 miles it has never been handled rough or driven off road.

Seaweed, there is nothing in there that would cause your CD player to quit working.

Would you like an OE CD/cassette combo?

At any rate...to see what the problem is (expecting whole shifter assy to need replacement) force the shifter a bit more forward and see if it clicks. If it does, try taking the key out. If not...well...brake interlock cable is ThunderbirdJunkie's 2nd bet.

Same exact issue.

Looks like an '06 problem. Has anyone tried to fix this themselves? I really don't have $700 to throw at the dealer right now. Any tips would be appreciated.

Key Stuck In Ignition

Same exact issue. Shift interlock cable. Key will not come out and can move through the gears without pressing the gear shift button once it is out of park.

Looks like an '06 problem. Has anyone tried to fix this themselves? I really don't have $700 to throw at the dealer right now. Any tips would be appreciated.

MOD NOTE: The thread I found was in the KK forum here. Please merge or move the topic as it is a KJ issue.
