Jeep Noobie

Sorry if this isn't the correct forum for this though I didn't know where else to post...

Anyway I recently brought a Jeep (yesterday) jumping out of excitement I bought the thing without checking everything it's a Cherokee 2.4L 2002 everything's fine though something that has me very worried is that when I put the Jeep into 4 wheel drive on the road it makes a clunking sound... Though in 2 wheel drive it's fine.

I've seen lots of threads where people have said it's very bad to drive in wheel drive on hard surfaces and that is the reason why I'm hearing the clunking sound in 4 wheel drive but I've also heard that it's something called a "U joint" and I should probably have it replaced....

The state of the Jeep is in immaculate condition and it looks as though as it's never been off the road and has a lot of service history...

Any help on this would be much appreciated

First if it's a 2002 it's a KJ. Which is called a Liberty here in the states. You might get better help if you repost on that page. Depending on which 4x4 system you have the clunks could be from the hard road surface conflicting with the 4wd. Could also be bad U-joints or CV joints, IDK which the KJ has.

IDK how to move a thread.. Probably easier to start a new one over there. I guess you could Copy and Paste it. By the way, Welcome to the forum.

I moved this thread to the Liberty forum section where your fellow KJ drivers can best assist. Good luck with the jeep!

Thanks again!

Does anyone else have any experience with this "rattle, clunking" noise?

Greetings and Welcome from Phoenix Arizona.

Do you know which transfer case you have? What are your selector options. Ours has 4wd part time, 4wd full time and 4 lo. (Plus 2wd). On the street you should only operate in 2wd and 4wd full time. Our selector makes it easy to remember as the 4wd full time is colored green, the 4part time and 2 lo are colored red.

Ours doesn't sound any different when in 4wd.

You technical can put it in 4wd part time and 4 lo while on the street, just make sure you are going straight as the front and rear shafts need to move at the same speed and the transfer case does not allow slippage when turning corners.

Hello! Thank you!

I don't know what transfer box I have though on the 4 wheel drive leaver I do not have 4wd full time only 4part hi and low.

I could try driving in a straight line in 4part/hi and low to see if it still makes the sound? I'm fairly sure it's still going to but I could try again.

You should never engage 4wd on the road. You will damage your transfer case if you continue to do so.

Find a softer place to test. Dirt, snow, mud....not road.

I had no idea at the time, we had it in 4hi for about 2 minutes and then put it back in 2 wheel because of the sound.

As soon as I have the time i'll find some softer ground where the wheels are likely to slip, muds probably the best thing to find?

Welcome aboard! Yes, outside of the United States they are called the Cherokee. 4WD in a part time four wheel drive vehicle is used only for off-road and on surfaces that will allow some wheel slip (such as mud, snow, sand etc.), otherwise if you were to run 4WD on pavement, concrete, or hard pack dirt you will experience driveline bind and possible damage to your transfer case.

On the backside of your transfer case there is a round metal tag that will give you a 231J (or other) designation. This tag represents what transfer case that you have.

Is the clunking sound normal if you have it in 4 wheel drive while on solid ground or should I get it checked out?

I'll check the transfer case though... Where under the Jeep can I find it?
