Jeep Liberty Unsafe?

My wife has a KJ and I have heard rumors of them being prone to explosions in bad accidents, but had never had any first hand evidence until this past weekend. What do you guys think about this?

Teenagers, spring break? How much flammable alcohol might have been inside the passenger compartment? Not exactly a complete report. I'm not worried, I survived driving my dad's Pinto.

Don't think you have much to worry about, I've seen a lot of accident photos of Libertys on the LOST KJ site, post over there and I'm sure some of the photos will resurface. The Libs can take a licking and stay safe as you will see from the photos. From the back they most be pretty beefy as I've seen some demolished front end photos of rigs that took on the Libs from the back that have way less damage. I imagine any rig can be an inferno if the right set of circumstances are there. Fuel lines fractured atomizing fuel under the hood with a spark and there you go.

the article says the liberty ran into the silverado. it must of been a hard imapact to rupture fuel lines. if the liberty ran into the silverado how do you know that the silverado's fuel system didn't start the inferno? i have been a ff/medic for 15 years (fulltime), i have seen some strange things happen in accidents. basicly the higher the speed of the impact the greater risk of fire (with any car). i have seen cars catch fire on accidents that are not prone to catching fire. and in reality every car is at risk (minimal risk) of fire in an accident!

As it was on the local news here I know some more facts of the fire. The Silverado hit the jeep on the passenger side as it swerved across the highway. The fire was confined entirely to the jeep. The jeep did suffer serious damage. I was just concerned as I have heard rumors of this before, try a google search on jeep liberty fires and you will see what I mean.

I do agree that the chances of an explosion/fire are non existent on a CRD.

My wife got rearended by a guy who had a heart attack. He hit her going at least 45mph and went under the rearend and her car didn't blow up.

This was a fluke

Thats reassuring, isnt it! Nah, I never doubted the safety of my KJ when i was daily driving it every day, never had any accidents in it, but i trusted it enough to drive it in Jersey traffic, so that says something.

OK, rear ending on interstates usually mean high rate of speed. Any vehicle that is rear ended has a chance of catching fire. It all depends on the rate of speed. Not only that 2 of the URL's are the same person. So a couple of instances in approx 600,000 (or more) KJs that are out there, is not too bad. Take a look at the below links on other makes of vehicles.

second recall down.

Every driver takes chances every time you get behind the wheel. If this was such a problem, DC would have recalled it.
