Jeep Liberty Power Steering Problem

Hi -

New to the forum hoping to see if anyone has any ideas about what is causing the power steering problem in my 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport, V6, 4WD, 175,000 miles

My power steering goes out when I am not accelerating (foot is not on the gas pedal). This is not a huge deal but it is starting to annoy my wife when she parks or turns while not accelerating.

I have checked the fluid level and it is fine. No whining or noise coming from power steering pump...

Any ideas or experience with this problem?

Hoping to fix this myself.

Sounds like a plugged system or just wornout PS pump since it does not work till increased rpm's are seen to increase the pressure.

Okay, so my pal and I were having some fun with the jeep, '04 jeep liberty 5 speed we were drifting her, and afterwards the steering wheel makes a moaning sound when turning it in neutral and is harder then usual to steer, but when I'm driving her the wheel is easy to move..what could it be? The owner before me has large ford tires that run against the bumper when I steer sharp, could the large wheels have pinched a hose? When I drive the steering is smooth but in neutral steer is harder and moans.
