[Help] Transmission problem

i posted this over at JeepKJ.com and thought it would be a good idea to post it up here as well

Hi guys, so i just finished dealing with the Valve cover gasket replacement and i need help with yet another issue.

I have an 03 Jeep liberty with the 42rle transmission and when i come to a stop sign and try to accelerate the jeep does not move but you can hear it accelerate. i need to put the jeep in neutral then drive and its fine. it does not happen all the time, just like once a week or so.

some possible suggestions people have made is:
linkage slipped Or Trans control ECM has gone bad.

Thanks for any info.

In my limited understanding, I'm leaning towards the linkage. I've come across a few similar threads and it seems there is a common issue with the Liberty shift linkage needing adjustments.

Just my 2 cents.

^thanks man. it should be an easy adjustment rite?

do i need to crawl up under the jeep and adjust some linkage there or should it be on the inside by the shifter?

if you can direct me towards any post that had a diy would be great.

thanks

I thought it was all solenoid activated? Next time it does this, try putting it in first instead of neutral

alright, so its cold and im putting off getting under the jeep until its nice.

question: what exactly am i looking for? i found a few posts on the wrangler side and its the linkage going from the shifter to the transmission and its connected by some cheap plastic nipple that is prone to breaking. is that it?

i did go in the jeep and pull the cover the shifter and everything looks good there, so once the weather gets better ill get under the jeep.

also, should i go ahead and drop the pan change the oil filter and gasket?

If it is just an adjustment problem then putting into 3/2/1 will work as well as putting into neutral. At least that is my thinking.

So i replaced gasket, the filter, magnet and a new pan. And the good thing was there is no brads color shavings.

Took the jeep down the Avenue and it responded better.

Will keep you guys updated

also, when i drained the transfer case the oil was black as night.

and the bolts on the transmission pan were loose, meaning when i put the socket on them i could twist them off with out applying any force.
