I have a 2004 Liberty. All of a sudden, there is a weird noise, clunking like, as if it may stall, but it doesn't. Then, it goes into gear VERY hard. It does not want to shift at all. It will upshift with less problem than downshifting. (it's a 5spd)

Is this a manual or automatic transmission? Either way I'd check the fluid level first and go from there.

It's a manual, 5spd. I know this sounds stupid, but is there an easier way to check the fluid than underneath? I don't see where there is a dip stick....

I don't have experience with the KJ manual but check out this thread:

Thanks so much. Waiting for the rain/snow to stop & will start by checking the fluids

Oh geez Eastport ME you are way up there! We actually had a nice blast of rain/sleet/snow here in northern MD. Weird winter/spring.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah, it has been a rough winter. Hoping to be able to get under it today, but it's a big mud pit out there from the rain.

Well, now I am told it may be that my clutch needs to be adjusted. Have not been able to check the fluid yet due to weather, and, I can't even buy it I have to order it online. But, if it is a clutch adjustment....any clue as to where to start with that?? I have no idea. I hate to play the "I'm just a woman" thing...but......

I'm not familiar with the kj 5spd, so I'm not sure about a clutch adjustment. Every manual trans rig I've ever had, showed those symptoms when the clutch or slave cylinder was going bad. You could try bleeding the slave cylinder and see if it helps. Also how does the pedal feel? Soft or firm?

Also is it easier to go from 1st to 3rd then from 1st to 2nd?

Thank you. It feels the same as it always has...some tension...normal I think.

Where does it disengage/engage in relation to the floor (pedal travel)? Does it start to engage/disengage close to the floor, or is it 1/2 travel or higher?

BeccaS 04-02-2014 06:38 AM

I would say maybe 1/4 of the way out, the vehicle will move (if that) My other car (Pontiac Vibe) You have to have the clutch right to the carpet to start it. Jeep isn't that way.

For a manual trans, it sounds like a worn clutch problem. Maybe an adjustment? Messed up clutch to pedal linkage?

The time now is 10:17 AM.
