Help! Clunking when shifting out of 4X4 Mode

I have a 2004 Liberty Renegade, and the 4X4 engagement is by a lever on the console. Recently, when I move the lever our of 4X4 on the highway I get what feels like hitting a hard bump on the road but is really related to getting out of 4x4 mode. Vehicle has 97,000 miles and has been driven mainly as a commuter, no real off-roading. Just driving in the snow on roads.

It can happen anywhere from 50 yards after disengagement to maybe a block.

I am worried something serious is wrong.

Any ideas on what to check?

Thanks!!

How long has it been since you changed your differentials and transfer case fluid? I had an International Scout that would do the same thing about every thousand miles. Popped off the cover, drained the difs, cleaned it out with gas (that was just how we did it back then, gas was cheaper than brake cleaner) and refilled.
