No way to avoid discharging the a/c. You have to disconnect the lines to remove the box and replace the heater core.

Heater Core Replacement

Did you resolve this issue? I just replaced the heater core on mine. I have a link to the service manual if you need it.

How bad was it? I have done other work to the liberty (pulled the heads, pulled the engine, brakes, etc) so I have some skill.

If you done the work aforementioned, your golden. I've done the same work before and honestly is equally tedious but not as bad as people make it out to be. The whole process took me about a solid week, after work mostly during the weekdays with a headlamp and wrapped everything up on Saturday morning. The heater core is pulled out vertically so you do need to discharge the A/C to remove the HVAC housing to clear the two inlets that penetrate the firewall into the engine bay. To my surprise the inlets are about 1.5" proud past the thermal wall. Hope everything goes well.
