Front drive shaft

My dad’s 2004 liberty front drive shaft broke (Don’t know where or how since he is in another country). He told me that the part number is 52111596AB. I found a replacement part on EBay but the last letter on the part number is different, this one reads 52111596AA. Can he still use it? If not where can I find a relative inexpensive front drive shaft? They are charging him $800 just for the part over where he is at. I found an OEM one for around $400, and the Ebay one is around $250.

Thank you,

Raul

The letters at the end are revision nomenclature, AA being an earlier rev than AB, etc. Although normally they are backward compatible I generally wouldn't trust used CV joints.

With a feedback of 688 and a 99.2% positive they sound like good guys to deal with. Personally I've had very good luck on eBay. They suggest contacting them and I certainly would in this case. Give them all of the info that you have and see what they say.

'04 liberties used two different transfer cases, they are not interchangable so mite use different length drive shafts

Do not buy,the wrong type of driveshaft for the front of a KJ,will cause issue in the long run.

Hey tjkj, I'm admittedly not a drive shaft expert, but why would the drive shaft with the u joints be bad? I read a lot of the article, and maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anything about why it would be bad.

The AA and AB are interchangeable. I had an AB shaft and changed it out for an AA OEM and it worked just great. The online MOPAR wholesale parts place said that they are essentially the same. They are both 16.5 inch shafts. I paid a little more for the OEM shaft $470 but I figure if the original OEM lasted 120K miles then another 120K for the difference in price from a questionable source is worth it.

It's called pinion angles. The front of the KJ does not fit any of the u-joint driveshaft criteria thus will cause issues. Also why it came with CV joints instead of u-joints due to space limitations.

Well you were right. I just got an email form him and it broke again. He wants to try to do a conversion to u-joints.

Here is where I need your guys help. He is in Venezuela. There is no way I can get him a new conversion u-joint drive shaft over there without paying a super high shipping fee and a ridicule import tax. A replacement drive shaft costs about $800 only if he can find it (you cant find anything over there these days)

If you have pictures of the conversion, please post them here. Also if you can give me the driveshaft length would be great and whatever other info he would need to know in order have it custom made over there.

Thank you so much guys!

Here is one that I saw. I can't say if there were any problems with vibration or not. The owner kind of disappeared off the boards. No measurements either. The front end is still a CV obviously.
