engine malfunction light

We just bought an 05' Liberty....literally we picked it up this past Friday. Today after arriving at work my wife ran out at lunch time to do some errands and noticed the malfunction indicator light was on. I gave the service dept. a buzz and they asked if we got gas recently, which we hadnt and I knew where they were going as our last car did that. We're still on the tank from the dealer, and the cap was secured.
Anyone got any ideas?

Response to Engine light query

In my particular case, the cause for the engine light coming on was a faulty EGR valve. It was replaced under warranty.

As far as I know, I'm the only person to own a flame red liberty with the light bar, and until someone disproves that to me, I'm going to enjoy it.

Hey Thanks guys. I'll give it try this am. Let ya know how I make out!

method one didnt work.
method two goes through the gauge count ie.. 1111111,2222222,3333333, then says 5.4 and returns to mileage then the check engine light begins to flash. Upon restart of the truck it goes back to staying on constant.

Ok, sorry for the long delay we were out of town. We ended up bringing it back to the dealer. The problem was, supposedly, an incorrectly installed leak detection pump. It apparently formed a crack and initiated the light. After my wife became infuriated that this would happen on a new ~$29K vehicle, they immediately removed a pump from another 05' on the lot to make the quick fix. Seemed to work thus far. We took it up to Lake Placid for the weekend and no trouble yet.

Thanks for all the other good stuff!!

Haven't heard that one ... My dealer seems ok so far ... they replaced my factory dipstick mod with a new straight one with no hassle, but if I ever need the assist .. think I could get your wife to give em a call?

Have you all experienced any problems with warranty work past 36K? I'm sitting on 45K miles now and just had the MI light come on. I haven't checked the codes yet...

I checked my codes last night at an Advanced Auto Parts store. Checking the code against the list I see this. "441 Evaporative purge flow system not working properly"... I have no idea what to check for now, any thoughts.

I don't think it's the gas cap, but maybe something related?

Thanks for any heads up.

which malfunction light? if its the one that looks like a little radiator in the middle, check your coolant level .. mine was right at the low mark from the factory and there was a loose clamp on a hose as well.

It was the Malfunction Indicator Light - Amber colored Transmission, on right hand side.
