my '05 crd has both electric and viscus/machanical fans. i read here years back that the machaical fan was part of the towwing package that i do have, and that without the tow package theres just an electric fan. do not remember if it applies to both gas and diesels. my electric fan is in front of the many heat exchangers on my crd (radiator, intercooler, a/c condenser, power steering and tansmission coolers) and i notice it running when the a/c is on.

Correct - a Diesel engine produces only enuff btu to get the job done, unloaded or loaded - the viscous cabin heater is proof of that: note how in cool weather the unloaded engine rarely warms up, or warms up very slowly - different matter, however, when loaded, as in towing: yer Diesel makes ever so much more btu than a gasser (patooie!) version, and being turbocharged results in even more btu - unloaded, only time you'll ever see the towing package option electric fan running is when the AC is on - tack on a 5000lb trailer and it's a whole new scenario, as Exhaust Gas Temperature rises to meet the increased loading and Engine Coolant Temperature rises due to the increased btu output - if ya gotta drawbar on the back of yer KJ CRD, ya gotta auxiliary electric cooling fan

Hi
The UK get the fan as standard on the CRD it doesn't run when the air con is on and will only run when the temp is high so that is why you have never seen it start up. Regards, Merlin
