Dropped valve ?

Took a 350 mile trip today....mostly at 70 mph . No problem . Took a jaunt to the nearest store tonight (20 miles away ) . Coming up a hill had a little valve tick . Then it disappeared after topping hill . Next hill it started again .....then became a louder and louder till it was almost a knock . Gas pedal went to floor , shuddered a bit and died . Slight oil smell , none showing . Light smoke outta` air intake for the filter . Won`t start by battery . Gonna` go try to jump it in the morning . `02 Liberty 3.7..146k miles .
Sound like the dreaded dropped valve ?
Thanks for any advice !

Tough to say. So you mean it won't turn over (crank)? Meaning the engine "locked up". Mine did this when I spun a bearing. I guess if you dropped a valve and it obstructed the piston travel then the same thing could result. Easiest thing to do would be to try to turn the engine by hand with a breaker bar on the crank bolt. Maybe pull the plugs to relieve compression and listen for contact. If a valve dropped it should show when you remove the cam covers too.

Step one: remove head
Step two: look

Seriously you may see something if you just pull the cam (valve) covers if it is valve train. Rotating by hand like I mentioned above may help narrow it down too. Really sounds like you think its up top so head removal would be logical. BUT you may pull the cover and see you just dropped a rocker of something simple although this seems unlikely. You have to pull the covers to remove heads so that's where I'd start.

Started to remove valve cover . Soon as it cracked open , yellow milky oil . Checked dipstick and oil filler . Same yellow milky oil . Checked radiator....oil in it . So it`s way more serious than I though....more`n likely time for a motor . Here`s the problem.....`02 Liberty in good/fair condition . Is it worth it to replace the engine ? Found one in Florida , 88k miles , shipped to my door for $1270 with a 3 year warranty . Then at least another $500 for the swap . So all in...close to 2 grand . Your thoughts . Thanks !!

You asked, so I'll give my a-hole opinion. Not worth it. Part it out, sell it, give it charity for a tax deduction, or whatever. People that really love their rig, and will be happy sinking good money after bad, don't ask that question.

You're likely to sink 2 grand into the motor, and that motor is likely to have an issue or two (warranty doesn't include labor). You might find yourself spending hundreds getting the computer to play nice. Then, if the motor is great, your transmission, transfer case, differentials, etc. will be next to go.

In my opinion, if you're asking if it's time to cut the line, you already know it is.
