CRD Turbo Cooling

I'm getting used to waiting for the glow plug light to go off before starting. I would imagine that it will stay on longer in the winter.

How long are some of you letting your engine run after parking to let the turbo cool down? The owner's manual states that you should let it idle for 5mins after good hwy driving?

Are you sure you are seeing your glow plug light illuminate? I doubt that in summer weather it would needed. My selling dealer, when going over the features of the car identified the little "lightening bolt" warning light as the glow plug light, which it is not. It is the warning light for the electronic throttle. The glow plug light looks like a "spiral".

Some of the things I read here of the dealer lack of knowledge about the CRD (sales and service) is astonishing!! My experience is just another example.....

I think you might have a problem with your CRD, or you have been reading the incorrect light. I had to look really close to even catch a glimpse of my glow plug light. I did see it one time, lit up for a second at most, and this was early one morning after spending the night high up in the Smokey Mountains. I live in Florida so, the early morning temps are usually 72* or so.
I watch mine on shutdown, turn off the A/C and wait about a minute to shut it down. If i have been idling along coming into a parking lot for instance, I don't worry about it, as i count that idle time as sufficient if it is a minute or more. The owners manual says this is an issue if you have been pulling a load, climbing a hill or running with boost right up until you pull off to stop. It is probably good for the whole engine to stop like that and let it cool a minute or two before shutting down.

If it needs to idle for cooldown of the turbo, why don't you all put a "turbo timer" on the truck. They only run about $100 ish.

I don't have a Liberty (yet) but I've owned plenty of VW diesels and the cool down period was for the cylinder head to cool off before there were tubo's on them. Also I've herd the VM motor used in the liberty is the same one used in the NON US Cherokees. I've read they had head gasket problems till they did something in 96 or 97 models. I'll assume jeep calls for synthetic oil and that should help on the turbo. I've not had trouble with head gaskets, since they changed bolts in 85, or turbo's on any of my vw's.

I noted the times recommended in the owner's manual for cooldown intervals, and they do seem quite long. I've a VW diesel, and the recommended cool-down intervals are much shorter, and they are indeed for the turbo, which is cooled by the engine oil. There have been a number of folks mention that they NEVER do that, usually in context of having to report their turbo has blown it's oil seals.

Perhaps the cool-down interval is partly reflective of the larger turbo used for the larger CRD engine.

Okay, I'm an idiot. I looked in the owner's manual for the glow plug light because I didn't want to screw anything up. I noticed it was a spiral in the book. When I went to start the dumb thing my brain told me "there it is... the lighting bolt thing!" My bad... now I'm gonna have to tell the wife. I need to make up a different story

My plug light doesn't even come on during the power on self test.

Just tell her that the lighting bolt means that the crd senses when rain is coming.
