CRD Transmission Rattle / Ticking at Idle
Hello everyone,
I am new to posting on this forum but not new to the site and I appreciate the member’s dedication to helping one another…. I think that this part of the internet is the best demonstration of the goodness in the human spirit. I have a question regarding A problem I am having with my newly purchased but used Keep Liberty CRD. I am experiencing a constant rattle coming from beneath the vehicle where the transmission meets the engine. It sounds like metal ticking and it is more evident when I am stopped and the vehicle is in gear. When I take it out of gear and place it in neutral the noise lessens. I also experience lots of energy stored in the wheels when I am stopped and in gear and the vehicle lunges forward when the brakes are released. I did have the right side motor mount replaced due to a rattle, and also the idler pulleys and alternator decoupler replaced because they were also making noise. The vehicle has had the Torque Converter recall done in 12/06 by the previous owner and the new ECU flash by the dealer recently. Yesterday I brought the vehicle to the dealer again so that he could diagnose the noise coming from the transmission and the tech said that it was normal. Has anyone experienced this noise coming from the transmission? Is this noise normal? Thank you

My 05 CRD makes no noise from the trans (in or out of gear), so would not consider it to be normal at all. Has yours made this noise since you purchased it?
There have been many owners that have had multiple replacements of the torque converter - the originals are known to be weak. Recently DC has now made the Euro TC (which is stronger) the new standard replacement for the US diesel Libby's. Could be a loose bolt on the TC, or something worse. There has also been a lot of failures of motor mounts (both drivers side and passenger) in the US and European models as well - which causes noise when the engine flexes them, sometimes causing contact from the motor into the body. Surging, or lunging after releasing the brakes is also not at all normal. How many miles on your rig ? This makes me think that the TC is is going bad (TC not releasing at idle), or some other issue. I expect that you have already checked your trans fluid after it is up to temp, to make sure it is not low or dirty and overdue for a fluid and filter change. It would be a great idea if you would fill out your jeeps profile - as it helps other members answer things if you post any questions. ![]()

One of mine needs a left motor mount, it sounds like there is nuts grinding when its in reverse or drive with my foot on the brake at idle. Usually the left motor mount (drivers side) is more prone to failure.

Mine is a 2006 CRD 86K and a 3 inch lift. So far nothing as you describe above for me. Worst thing to happen was mud between the skid plate and the engine that would shake the hell out of the rig until the engine heat would losen it up.
Also, find that the dealer here in SF is a bit clueless in dealing with the CRD. In your case if it was only the noise I'd check all your bolts and hope to find something loose, but the surge you describe ( did it all start about the same time?) Sounds ominous. What are the RPMs at idol? |

Glad you were able to get the problem fixed, did the dealer do the repair?

I think that you should have gotten the new Euro TC, which supposedly is a much better unit than the originals. Hopefully there was transferable 7/70 when you bought your 05.

I did get the new Euro TC and pump but the 7/70 was not transferable and the dealer did not perform the work. I had a local shop do it for $600 labor.
