CRD stalling
It's been a while since I've posted anything. Here's the deal. I just had my 05 CRD with 69,000 miles on it in the dealer for a check engine light issue. They told me it was the air flow control valve and it was replaced under warranty. I picked the jeep up and 2 miles down the road the cel comes back on. I turn around and take it back in. They hooked the computer up and it showed the EGR valve was bad. My first thought is that they should have caught hat the first time. I'm told they will order parts and call me. So yesterday I'm coming home from a 500 mile trip and suddenly the jeep starts losing power. Foot on the floor and it's slowing down. I pull over, shut it off, wait a few mins. re-crank and drive away normally. 15 miles later it starts losing power again, this time the engine just quits running. I coasted off the road, waited a min or 2 and re-cranked. This time it would barely accelerate up to 50 mph, and would not hold speed going up a hill, (I live in the mountains). Again it slowed and the engine shut down. I shifted into neutral and re-cranked while still rolling and barely made it home. I'm calling a tow truck in the morning to take it back to he dealer. My question is this. Is the EGR valve causing the engine to lose power and shut down or is there something else going on. I only have about 600 miles left on the warranty and need to get it fixed right. Thanks for any help.

Your engine has went into limp mode. Could be air in fuel head or lines from tank, EGR death, blown turbo hose and or several other possible things. If this does turn out to be the EGR, it eventually will happen again. You need to do one of a couple of things after getting it warrenty repaired (also have them check the fuel head for leaks at the fuel heater plug / could be warrentied at same time) , either get a SEGR kit and solder it all together - then install it into your vehicle (not for the total novice) OR get a GDE tune to your factory ECU ~ eliminates said EGR (plus many other things) via programming. Post up as to what the outcome is at the dealer, and be sure to see if they need to warrenty fuel head because of either fuel or air leaks - or burnt or melted fuel heater plug ( just saying this part twice ). Then leave the fuel heater plug unplugged.

Thanks for the replys. It's still at the dealer, holiday delay. They ordered ab EGR valve. I'll ask them to check the fuel / air issue.

Be sure and look at the fuel heater plug yourself, dealers generally do not pull the plug and look for melting or electical scoring or burning on the plug itself and/or where it plugs into the fuel head. If it has any marking or discoloration in either location (plug or socket) try to get them to warrenty this at the same time B4 your factory 7/70 ends so there is only one deductable charge. FWIW

Well the other day I finally got my car back from the dealer after 2 1/2 weeks. All this to take care of a problem that it was in for earlier. When I had it towed in the last time I asked them to check the fuel system as some of you had mentioned. They did their work (did I mention they had it 2 1/2 weeks?) and sent me on my way. About 15 miles down the road the engine dies. OK so now I'm really pi$$ed. From the side of the road I call and speak with the GM of the dealership and let him know what's going on and exactly how I feel about it. The car did re-start and drove most of the way back normally, but went into limp mode about 2 miles away. I did make it back to the dealership. They took it in and what do you know, the mech. came out and said the fuel filter was clogged. With the GM standing there I reminded them that I had asked for that to be checked and that they were the ones who had done (or were supposed to have) ALL the service work for the last 69,000 miles. 30 mins. later I was out the door with a new fuel filter and now everything is running smoothly.
Sorry for the long rant but these guys are just plain lazy, and have lousy customer service. |

I do feel your anger and dismay !! Most ChryCo dealers do not have a knowledgeable diesel tech on their roster. Filter should have been one of the first things on their to do list. Filter should be changed at a minimum every 20K miles IMHO as basic maintenence. Good to here your up and running. ![]()

Fuel filter change interval
Per the FSM (factory service manual) for my 06 CRD the change interval for the fuel filter is 25,000 miles. So at 69k you were almost due for the third change
![]() I have no problem halving that figure as I only drive about 12k a year. They do not have to be gotten from the dealer as NAPA (WIX) both have them available. I got several online for under $20 each
