crd oil filter

has anyone(95badboy) used the higher capacity mobil 1 m1-301 oil filter yet on the crd. the reason i ask is because i got one for mine on a sugestion i got here but have not yet installed. a friend with a '95 GC with the 4.0 uses the m1-301 in it. i did not think the two motors could share the same oil filter.

I'm useing the M1-301 on my 05 along with M1 5-40 TDT synth oil. Like it, fits well and gives the extra .5 qt capacity. Those two Jeeps just happen to have the ability to run that one. Have read a few times that there is less oil consumption by keeping the oil just below the full mark on our CRD's. Don't know if that is fact or fiction - But have been doing it on mine.

thanks for the confirmation, i like to fill my oil filters before i install them, something the factory filter will not do. that would be a bad time to find out the m1-301 did not fit.

Your filter is actually way below the crankcase, because of which there is no need to prefill your filter on these. If in doubt - you could remove your filter before taking the plug out to test the idea. But I don't recommend it - it might make a large mess on the floor.

Many CRD'rs also use a Fumoto drain valve - do to the potential stripping of the alum oil pan - but that you probably already knew.

if possible i like to fill oil filters as much as i can. my thinking is that the oil pump does not have to fill the filter first before the bearings get fed oil. you could test this by the time it takes after restart for the oil light to go out. it is only 2 or 3 seconds with the small/stock oil filter but that is run time with no oil pressure. i have the fumoto vave on now, we have discused the clearance it has with the nipple and room for the m1-301 filter earlier.

Partially filled is not a bad idea, though have not really noticed a long oil light - but probably have not been looking for that per say. I do understand the concept for a prefill though. Now that you mention it, I do remember the earlier discussion of the Fumoto and clearance. Must be just another senior moment.

I think this week, will start calling around to locate a better (read cheaper) source for these filters. It really seems the prices vary wildly - depending on the parts store/vender. Not to mention that there are fewer options up in this neck of the woods.

Oil I can come by reasonably priced when Smallmart has thier M1 oil on sale. Filters here are on the high side at $13 + tax.

If you use synthetic oil (I use Amsoil European Car Formula) and an Amsoil Ea034 filter you really dont need more filtration. If anything add a bypass filter to your system.
