CRD fuel filter upgrade (CAT filter)

Does anyone know what particle size the CRD fuel filter will remove? I have a VW TDI to which I added a 5 micron CAT filter about 30K miles age. I expect (hope) this change will increase the expected life of the TDI's injection components. A discussion on Fred's TDI site mentioned the CRD and the poster made the comment, that in his opinion adding such a filter was the most important upgrade that could be made to a vehicle with a common rail injection system. I tend to agree and wonder if anyone upgraded their fuel filter?

This is a change that I may consider doing depending on the specs of the standard fuel filter.

Thanks,
Dave

CRD Factory Filter

Is rated at 3 micron, thermostatically controlled, electrically heated and rated to -40 F. At least if the fsm is correct :-) Not sure the CAT 2 micron filter would help much. Yes, I agree that a filter that can capture particles down to less than 5 microns is critical with high pressure injection systems. There used to be study on the net somewhere showing accelerated injector wear when higher pressure diesel systems appeared. They defined the old systems as 2000-3000 psi and newer systems as 20K-30K systems, exactly where the CRD and VW TDI's fall into.

CRD: Bypass oil filter Delvac 1

That is good news, 2 micron, no need to spend any money there.

Anybody using a bypass oil filter? I have one of those on the shelf which I never installed in my TDI. Many VW people use bypass filters with extended drain intervals after performing baseline oil analysis. I think I could safely follow the 12,000 mile change interval, if using a bypass filter. I've been using Delvac 1 5-40 synthetic in my TDI since it was new. I plan to use it in my CRD also, assuming it meets the DC requirements. I'm not too keen on regular Mobil 1 in a diesel. I think Molil 1 is a fine oil and I've used it for years in my gassers.

Have a good look

in the CRD engine bay and see if you can fit it in... let us know if you find a space big enough to mount the bypass filter...
