Aftermarket air filters

The talk about aftermarket oil-based air filters, like K&N, allowing more dirt into the engine got me thinking....

If you really were dying to do a filter mod, you could do it with a different stock filter that's a bit larger -- just an inch or so would be a lot of extra square inches. One side benefit would be that the extra surface area would make the filter last longer and flow better even as it collects some dust-n-dirt, since the filter is oversized for your engine.

Ideally, first find a stock airbox that would still fit in your engine compartment and takes a bit larger filter, and probably adapt a different air hose for a good tight fit at both ends to seal out dust.

You'd have a stock-looking higher-flow induction system (whether your engine can use it or not) probably cheaper than buying a whole aftermarket kit.

If you properly maintain your K&N you wont have a problem. Service it every time you change your oil (every 3,000 miles) and it will do its job.

Although I haven't changed mine out yet,I've run K&N air filters on my vehicles for the last 15 or more years with no problems.

It was really just an alternative idea my idle brain came up with. It'd take some measuring of your airbox and then scouting around other airboxes and measuring them to get an idea of what would fit.

I have an '05 4.7L Durango and an '05 4.7L Cherokee -- maybe those would be good candidates for a Liberty airbox. I'll post the measurements so you can compare to your own airbox.
