4 wheel indicator doesnt match lever

I have an 05 Jeep liberty. Ive noticed lately the indicator on the panel is out of sequence with the 4 wheel drive lever. The mechanics of the 4 wheel driver work fine. When in two wheel a light on the dash says "part time"; pull the lever back to actual part time and the panel says "full time" Indicator seems to have shifted position by one.

Any one else experienced this and maybe found a fix?

There is a "position" sensor for this lever that goes out on these things all the time. You don't really need to replace it if you don't need it as it won't hurt anything being "wrong". If you know where 4wd is then just leave it. If you wanna replace it go to a parts store and get a new one. It's called a transfer case position sensor.

Thanks for that info. Do you know this "transfer case position switch" is located and can I easily access it to change it myself?

I would normally not care except I dont like seeing the "part time" light stare at me even if I know its in 2 wheel.

Transfer Case Problem on my '03 Liberty - CarSpace Automotive Forums

Since this device talks to the PCM, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to replace it. Might affect some computer controlled things like traction control/etc.

I was just under the jeep. Had to remove a guard plate to fully view the transfer case, which is where dealers schematic said the "transfer case position sensor" is located. Couldnt find it. Besides dealer wants $73 for the switch.

There has to be an easier and cheaper way to kill the light on the dash. Im thinking of disabling it. Im thinking of going to the library to view the Chiltens electrical schematic for the instrument cluster. Find the wire for the "part time" position, and clip it. Sounds easy? Maybe. Maybe the Jeep wont start next. lol

Still open to ideas or comments

You could google Mopar Discount parts and get a few shops that sell parts less than retail. Maybe even Rock Auto could get the part you need cheaper. FWIW

Thanks bad boy, but now Im focused on eliminating the illumination. Chilton's on line from my local library, isnt telling me for sure which wire to clip. The more I think about this, one wire clipped probably will take out more than I want. Could try to pull the bulb.....this is turning into a project

Don't clip wires. Find a service manual for your Jeep online somewhere and look in there for the sensors location. Cutting wires is bad. Someday you'll wish you hadn't.

I agree. I wouldn't suggest cutting wires. I would just change the t-case position sensor.

Just my opinion.

SOLUTION FOUND. You have to access the instrument cluster through the dash. Not as bad as it sounds. The hardest part was finding the screws that hold the molding to get to the cluster. Once the cluster is accessed, there is no bulb in the position of the "part time" They used a micro light attached to the board. Dont cut or damage anything. Use a 1/4 drill to access the housing in the immediate location of the "part time light. Next, fill the area with some material to block the light from reaching the dash. Reassemble. No cutting, no mess, everything works except that damn "part time" light has been silenced. Gone even at night. 30 minutes total, $0.

Most people wont go to this extreme and just tolerate the light. I see it a personal battle to defeat manufacturer who would rather we spend big money to fix, which wouldn't be necessary if they adhered to the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid). What I mean is the 4 wheel indicator lights on the dash are overkill and unnecessarily complicated when just noting the position of the lever will tell you what drive you are in.
