4 wheel drive noises.....04 Liberty

OK so I'm new to this forum and have been searching for some answers. I have an 04 with 84000 miles. I've had it for just over a year. Last winter was the 1st time I used the 4 wheel and it seemed to make kind of a loud humming noise, seemed weird for being a newer vehicle and all, but I thought nothing of it. Didn't use 4 wheel all summer and then over the last month we have gotten significant amounts of snow. I used 4-hi on the highway going to work and it seemd the same as last winter. Coming home the humming noise seemed louder. Anyone elses make this noise? If not what do you think it is? I have been avoiding using it as much as possible but I have to in my driveway. Now it makes a clicking noise form the front end? I can't tell if its from the front CV joints or transfer case? Anyone have a guess as to what this could be and about how much to fix?

Thanks

Clicking is generally the CV's going out. You can get reman. from Napa for $75.00 ea. with core trade.

No neccessarily true. At the dealership I work at the front driveshaft tends to be a problem alot of the time. It will make a clicking noise like a CV will too. Best thing to do is put it up on four jack stands securely, put it in 4wd then put it in drive and start spinning the tires to pin point it that way

Good call on the driveshaft possibility, and a lot less work if that turns out to be the problem.

I didn't think of it when I posted but to the OP. Put it in 4 LO and if you get the same click then you can narrow down to a CV or Driveshaft. If It doesnt make the sound in 4 Lo then I would start suspecting the Transer case. Also its not advised to run 4 HI all the time unless the roads are slick. If they are dry then you can destroy the driveline on your vehicle. Thats straight from chryslers mouth.

ok thanks for the info....I'll see if I can find some time to dig into it this weekend. If it is the driveshaft, can it be fixed or do I have to get a new one?

As far as running 4-HI, I only run it in the snow when the roads are bad otherwise I'm playing in 2 wheel.

Again thanks and I'll keep you posted on the results.

No known fix that I'm aware of. Options are a used from a junk yard, new from the dealer, or custom made with new yokes and u-joint repacements.

Then I'd more than likely point at the driveshaft then BUT unless you can put it in the air and check it over its hard to say. IMO tho I'd say driveshaft typical problem associated with dodges, jeeps, ect.

If you replace the front driveshaft use OEM or get one from NAPA......Do NOT get one from Autozone. Put them side by side when you do the swap and make sure they are EXACTLY the same.
