3.7L Valve Seals - Special Tool

Hi Everyone,

Going to apologize upfront as I feel like this has been answered before, but I can only find bits and pieces across different forums and searches.

2003 Jeep Liberty, smoke on startup - assuming valve seals. Not sure if this is related, but have thrown an occasional O2 sensor code. Usually goes off with time.
Also getting smoke in the engine bay - assuming valve cover gaskets.

Ideally, I would like to keep the heads on & replace the valve seals.
With that said, there isn't much information online regarding replacing the valve seals with the heads still on the engine.

My question - Is a special tool required (hanks tool or similar) or will Miller Tools MLR8387 work, with the heads on the engine?
If I remove the heads, is a special tool still required?

I'm trying to figure out if the amount of work required is sufficient to resolve the problem. Temped to change the oil and try some Lucas to see if it helps.

Thanks for any & all help with this!
Jon
