2004 Jeep Liberty won't start, changed starter and charged battery.
So, I bought a 2004 Jeep Liberty 4 cyl. manual transmission a few weeks ago. I got to drive it for a week without any problems, then one day I went to work. When I got off work, it wouldn't start. It wouldn't turn over or anything. I pulled the starter and had it checked, it was terrible. So I replaced it. After replacing it, I was getting a rapid clicking noise when I tried to start it. I thought this was because the battery wasn't fully charged. So I used a Volt meter on it and it was around 12.2 Volts. So I took the battery out and got it charged. After putting it back in, the Jeep still will not start, and the rapid clicking noise is gone.
When I try to turn it on, all it does is dim all the lights down really far. I accidentally shorted out the starter after I first replaced it and it spins fine. But nothing else happens.
I do not know what else to do to it/for it to get it to work again.
Any Suggestions? Anyone else have this issuse?
Can you turn the engine over by hand with a socket spanner on the crankshaft bolt?
What is the voltage over the battery terminals at the time that your light go dim....if it drops down to about 10 volts then your battery has a dead cell.
Check fuse 8 in the fuse box under the hood.
First make sure that the battery terminals are clean and tight, the negative battery lead going to the chassis is clean and tight and the earthing strap going between the engine and the chassis is clean and tight on both ends.
Then jumper pins 30 and 87 together in the Starter Relay socket...make sure you are in neutral when you do this...the engine should turn over.
If it does now turn over it means that either your Starter Relay is faulty...swap out with an identical one next to it or your clutch switch is faulty or you have the infamous "ignition switch actuator broken" fault.
For the actuator problem...remove the covers from the steering column and remove the ignition switch from the actuator...turn the ignition switch by means of a small flat screwdriver.
So I finally got the Jeep into a Mechanic, and the problem wasn't any of the places I was approaching. The actual problem was that the AC Compressor locked up. Because their is a Belt for the entire entire, the Jeep was unable to rotate the belt while the AC Compressor was locked. It was completely trashed so I replaced it. It now works perfectly.
