2003 Liberty won't start

I had a nice little surprise this evening. After a fun filled day at the beach my wife dropped of her sister and her Liberty wouldn't start. After an hour of messing around with it, I figure it's either the fuel pump or a clogged filter. The engine cranks hard and almost started a couple of times but never quite fired up. My wife said she started it up just fine, she got out because the rear hatch was still open and it just sputtered out. While we were trying to get it started , I could smell gas fumes coming from the engine bay. Could it be that I'm not getting a spark to fire up the fuel reaching the engine? What could cause this? If anyone has any ideas before I start digging into this, I would greatly appreciate it.
