2003 Liberty with Transmission Issues

Hey all.

Have a 2003 Jeep Liberty (Sport) with about 54k miles on it.

Lately I have been having some issues with my transmission:

When I am in park, and I reverse out of my spot, and then move into DRIVE the car continues to roll backwards for a few seconds, and then kind of KICKS and allows me to drive forward. While it is rolling backwards, nothing happens when I accelerate! This is becoming very dangerous, as I now have to stop reversing sooner then I would, and measure how much room I will have including the rolling.

The same happens when I go directly from park into drive. It will just sit there for a few seconds (tried accelerating, nothing happens) and then all of a sudden kick and allow me to proceed forward.

I also have the feeling that the gears are not catching up as smoothly as they usually do when I am driving from around 25-40mph.

The Check Engine light has also come on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am a starving college student and really cant afford to be ripped by a mechanic right now.

Took it to AutoZone.

The engine light had turned off at this point but I was/am stilling having issues with transmission.

They connected it to the scanner and it returned:
incorrect gear 1 ratio
incorrect gear 3 ratio

The engine light turned back on during my ride home.

Sounds like very low transmission fluid level. Fill it to the proper level with ATF+4 anything else and you will have transmission problems.

Check the tranny fluid with the tranny in N. If its cold, it may be just a tick under HOT.

Checked it when I first had problems and it seemed fine..maybe I am reading it incorrectly? Never done this before.

Any one have an image of what it SHOULD look like?

Also, would I still be receiving the gear ratio errors because of trany fluid?

I was noticing similar roll back on my jeep and the no acceleration issue since I purchased my 06 new. I've been trying to use it primarily for my mail route so the transmission does get more of a work out (it has been in the shop...allot..since I bought it 12/2005). Two valve bodies and two solenoid packs have been replaced. I'm at 52,xxx now and it is shifting better. I was originally told by a dealership's service dept manager that the roll back is just how vehicles are made these days but after the second valve body and solenoid pack were installed the roll back has decreased dramatically. I gave up on that particular dealership at 36,000 miles; they didnt seem to want to address the issue anymore since my warranty had expired. Said they couldn't help me and I just needed to call Chrysler. There was a national back order on valve bodies which leads me to believe it is an issue, maybe something to look at it.

There have been alot of valve bodies replacing in 42RLE transmissions, for a condition that there is no real fix for yet, and it is severe torque converter shudder in 06 Liberties 3.7L, 300s, Magnums, Chargers alll with the 2.7L & 3.5L engines.
The roll back is due to the lower line pressure of the 05 and newer 42RLE transmissions, it is not so bad with the 42RLE with variable line pressure but it is still there. But once it is put into gear it shold be fine the rest of the day.

Ive been lucky so far, cross my fingers. 316,000 miles on my 2002 liberty and no transmission problems yet. When it happens as it surly will I will probable have a remanufactured transmission installed, Unless I just decide to junk it when the time comes.
