2002 Liberty won't idle

I have just recently got a 2002 Liberty that is not currently running, it starts but blows blue smoke out the exhaust and dies if RPMs get below around 500. I started it and let it run for a while keeping the RPMs around 1000 and the problem went away for about 10 mins and then started back up again. Just wondering if anyone knows what this might be? Been told it may be a valve but would like input on possible cheaper options to start with.

I haven't seen anything but haven't had much time to look at it. I just acquired the vehicle yesterday afternoon and am a new jeep owner, how do I check for engine codes?

I tried the check tonight when I got off work and it didn't show any codes. It actually didn't show anything other than the odometer reading
