2002 Liberty - Oil Light, Leaks, etc.

Any suggestions for a 2002 Liberty Sport with the following symptoms:

- The oil light comes on when braking. Goes off, when brake is released.
- Looses oil. Leaves drips under vehicle. It is not leaking from the filter or oil pan bolt. My guess is the rear main seal?

Why would the oil light come on while braking?

I use Bar's Rear Main Seal repair with every oil change. Short of getting this seal replaced, does anyone have any other suggestions? What else would it be if not the main seal? Any other product suggestions?

Lastly, how much should it approximately cost to get this replaced by a mechanic. How hard is this to do for the home mechanic?

Bar's Leaks doesn ot work.

Have you looked at where it's leaking from? IF the back of the engine is dry, then it's not the rear main seal.

You symptoms are consistent with a bad oil pressure sending unit, located just above the filter.

It's easy to replace.

Thanks for the info.

Is the pressure sending unit the same as the oil pump?

And the oil pump is an easy replace?

What about the main seal? Is that an easy task?

No, it is not the same thing.
Rear main seal in any car is not easy.

As was said before, the oil pressure sending unit is ABOVE THE OIL FILTER. You'll see a plastic doohickey, probably hemorrhaging oil, with two wires going into it on the pedestal for the oil filter.

How difficult of a task is that? Time? Cost? Experience?

The Liberty has 199,000 on it.

Hoonestly, I took it to my dad and he did it...I dont have the tools to do it myself but he said it was pretty easy and the unit itself was like 40bucks if I remember correctly but I have seen some cheaper. He said it is something that a semi experienced mechanic could do...you just need the tools!

04 liberty with red oil light on

hi there - sorry to post this as a reply to your thread - i couldn't figure out how to start my own thread. i have an '04 liberty with 86k miles on it, and the red oil light just started coming on. it has come on twice, in the morning, when it's cold, and stays on until I get to work. after i start it later in the day, it is off. i am religious about changing the oil every 3k miles, and i have 2k miles before it needs to be changed again.

any ideas? i want to keep this car forever.

Oil Light !

Kamie65 If you want to keep the kj forever, it is a real bad idea to drive it with an oil light on, without knowing the cause. If the oil pump stops pumping, say bye bye to your motor.
When Light is on-Without starting the Kj, turn your key forward not the accessory position forward only then -on-off-on-off-on (leave in on) and look at the speedometer mileage lcd and see if it reads some codes back, record those codes.
Post codes back in here.

Main Conditions of oil light ON - LOW ON OIL did you check the level on dipstick?
Oil Pressure sending unit
Low Pressure-Oil Pump
Hope this helps !

LibertyTC - thank you so much. I did what you said, and nothing came up in the LCD screen. i work at a dealership, and I had my service advisor check the oil, he said it was fine. i'm going to have one of the techs change it today, even though it's early, just to be sure. what else should I do?

Use a code scanner!

If you are at a dealer get them to try to pull any codes from the OBDII port.
One thing is certain, if the oil light is on there is a problem, and checking the codes should give the best solutions applicable.
Before the oil change, look for any oil leaks, from pan, filter area, above filter at
sending unit.
Loss in pressure (oil leaks) can cause a drop in pressure as well.

I found a leak this weekend under my Liberty and upon further investigation it was dripping from the oil filter. From the filter all the way to the gas tank was all spattered with motor oil. I thought it was the oil sending unit since it's right above the filter but it turned out I had a pin hole on the Fram filter. I was within 500 miles of an oil change so I went ahead and did it, the new filter fixed the leak. It was weird to get a pin size hole on the filter itself...

I have a friend that has a liberty and her oil light comes on randomly. It does not stay on long. It will not come on for 15-20 miles then it will pop on then off. Then it may not come on for another 20 miles or so. Very random. It usually will come on and go right off. The longest it stayed on was 5-10 seconds. Sounds like the oil sending unit may be going bad. Does what I described sound like that to you guys. Thanks!

Its more than likely the sending unit and it's easy to change out; right above the oil filter housing.
