2002 jeep liberty five speed trans 6 cyl

My five speed trans in my 6 cyl. Jeep liberty is noisy. I was told it's normal. I would like to know if I can use a thicker grade oil other than what the manufacture calls for. such as a 90 wt.gear oil.

Im not sure about the thicker oil, but I know it has to meet the MS-9224 specification. I put Valvoline synchro mesh gear oil in mine and it it harder to shift into gear and doesn't like the cold very well. I don't know if it was ever changed before, either. Mine is on the loud side while in neutral with the clutch engaged, in first gear, and fifth gear.

You probably shouldn't use gear oil. If you check the spec, they likely want a GL-4 spec fluid, not GL-5. They tend to be noisier, but you may want it checked for bearing noise.

Is the noise from the trans or the throw out bearing?
