06 CRD Milage Problem

I have an 06 CRD that was getting between 340-370 miles per tank until recently it has plummented to around 230 miles per tank. IT is running good with no noticable problems except it is getting harder to start as in it takes more turn-over time before it starts.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

John

Bleed air out of the fuel head would be the first step. Change fuel filter if it has not been done in a while. Look for any leaks at and around where the fuel heater plug is, actually unplug that heater plug and look inside for any signs of melting inside there and any melting or burnt looking prongs on the plug itself. This is pretty well known to be a issue and a place of air ingress that is one of the causes of hard starting or not starting at all.

Leave that heater plug unplugged. There have been fuel leaks and fires too from that little unit. Have you had any CEL's at all ?

Clean the MAP sensor. There are many other things - but I won't go there just yet.

your mpg stinks to begin with, my crd only drops below 20mpg when plowwing snow or pulling a two horse trailler locally. i do not know how or what type of driving you are doing but you are north of the boarder where it gets cold. the mpg in diesels drops with the tempiture, i also am idling more in the cold. the crd's belt driven viscous heater does not help thing either.

Damn, I always get over 550 to 600 miles per tank. A few times Ive gotten 740+. From a drivers perspective, diesels are VERY RPM specific. If you exceed 62 MPH so you can get into 5th gear and then back off to 57-60 MPH and set the cruise you'll get WAY better mileage than you will driving 75+ MPH.

Another thing, you should (IMO) always use a fuel additive per fill up. I use Stanadyne or Amsoil or Lubro Moly.

But Joe, you are a full on hyper-miler.

Most folks are into the skinny pedal (and l am probably one ), and enjoying the daylights out of our torque curve.

wow, i do not think my crd could get 37mpg on the back of a flatbed. my best mpg was 27mpg towwing a boat up to the cape in august, and 33 and change comming back without it. normal for me is 22-24 mpg. i do run a module and power service both which help. i run 65-70mph with the a/c on the highway, i like getting good mpg but spent way to much to be sweating out a couple of mpg in the slow lane.

HA! That's right. I regularly get 60+ with my 2001 TDI Jetta. That said, if you fold in both mirrors and pump up your tires above 40psi and set the cruise at 58mph (1700 rpm) you can break 30 mpg pretty easily......

Ya Ya, I know I could increase it a bit more. After the tune went in, immediately went from 26 to 33 hwy without doing anything differant at all. Just the way it should be. Then I don't have to think about it.

I'm sure winter blend is going to kick the crap out of those numbers though.
