03 Manual Transmission Liberty Overheating in Traffic
I have a similar issue to some of the other users that I thought you may be able to help me with. I have a '03 liberty sport, 2.4 L 4-cyl engine, with a manual transmission. it has 202000 miles. I have had problems with the Jeep overheating while I am sitting in stop and go traffic. It does not happen while driving at normal speeds or idling in place even with the AC at full blast. Fan turns on fine and runs well when I turn on the AC and I also checked that it was running with the AC off after I have been driving for a while and the engine is warm. Fluid levels are fine and stay constant unless the car begins to overheat (3 instances where I have been stuck in traffic and had to pull off the road) and then the coolant level will go down. Temps in top radiator hose, radiator, and bottom radiator hose are constant when measured with an IR thermometer. Once it begins to overheat it will quickly correct itself and get back to normal temps if I start moving constantly even at relatively low speeds (25 mph or higher). Any Ideas what might be the problem?

Sounds like a coolant flow issue so most likey a bad waterpump.Sounds like it's time for a timing belt change.

I am currently going through a similar situation. I was one my way home from training for my job on friday when traffic stopped moving. I happened to notice that my jeep had started to over heat. before the needle got to the red, which i know you should not let it get that high, traffic started moving and the needle returned to normal as if it had never happened. when ever i was stopped at a red light or stopped in traffic the needle would then start to go back up. when i started moving it would go back to normal. My brother is a mechanic and i called him. his first diagnosis was a coolant leak. I was able to drive the 60 miles home without over heating. upon talking with my brother again he told me to put water in it which i did. yesterday and today i had no issues. he was waiting for me at my house when i got home from work. He looked over the water pump, thermostat housing, and radiator. my problem is that i have a cracked radiator. my jeep is at 185,800+ miles. Just curious to know, about how much is a radiator to replace? Just wondering if maybe you knew?
