'02 Liberty Passenger Side Front Door Lock

I have an '02 Jeep Liberty where the front passenger side door lock stopped working. If I use the keyless remote on the lock you see it try to move up and then it goes back down. It might actually be in the up position already. The thing is, you cant move the lock up or down manually. However, you cant open the door from outside at all, but you can open it from the inside. Does this sound like the whole door lock mechanism needs to be replaced? Does anybody have the replacement steps documented? Also, is there a good recomendation for where to buy the replacement part? Aftermarket / Dealer? Does it impact the key for the lock when changed out?

You need to remove the inner door lining to have a look at what is going on.

You can download the 2002 KJ Service Manual here:

How much for the lock mechanism? Is it new or used?

Inerestingly enough, I started to take the latch assembly out of the door and at some point I tried it again before complely taking it out of the car and it was working. Put it back together and it is now working. Not sure if it will last or if it will stop working again. I will keep this part in mind if it breaks again.
