Clunking noise when apply brakes and worse as i reverse.

Hi all.
I'm new here. I have a liberty (cherokee in UK) kj. It is a 2.5 diesel. It is a manual gear box. When driving sometimes as I engage brakes I get a noise from the front of the car. Front left I think.
When I engage reverse it feels normal but then as I head off backwards I get a bang and a jump then it is fine and twice it has refused to go back just stopping like the hand brake is on or the back wheels are against a rock. Both times putting the jeep in 4x4 has allowed me to go back without too much prolem... It has only 80000 miles on it.
Is it bad......
